Square One
So I haven't blogged in awhile. A little shameful, but I had nothing to blog about. Moving, packing, and unpacking is boring as sh*t, and possibly a fate worse than death, and I wasn't about to bore you, dear Reader, with the details. Consider yourself lucky.
Last night, I started reading Jill's "Square One". And I just finished it 30 minutes ado. An excellent NaNoWriMo effort. Scratch that, and excellent effort. I loved it from page 1 to page 191. I loved the writing style, I loved the plot, and most of all, I loved the characters. When I read a novel, I get deeply involved in the characters lives. Empathize with them, etc... And "Square One" was no exception. I didn't want it to end, and am now sad that it did.
One thing I noticed was that the writing style changed slightly over the course of the book. Jill, you really came into your own in terms of your writing voice. And, truth be told, it reminded me a lot (in a good way) of Stephen King's writing voice. You have a lot of the same mannerisms, and I found that very enjoyable. And the story itself was heartbreaking at times, and hilarious at others. Just like an Esmonde. Seriously, I almost cried when Annie went to Jay's new apartment. Well, let's be honest. I did cry. And Tab. Oh Tab, I laughed so hard, I cried. And Ryan! At the end, it was the sweetest.
I don't think I can say enough how much I loved this book. And a very wise therapist once said that when you read a book, you learn more about the writer than anything else. Not that I'm saying that Jill is Annie, but I saw a lot of Jill in this book. And that was great!
Needless to say, I am more excited than ever to read the other novels from last year's NaNoWriMo, and to start writing!
Another thing I realized when I was reading Jill's novel was that I miss you all so much. And I can't wait to crack open those first few Silver Bullets on June 1 at midnight, and spend a month with you, getting to know you better. If only we could write at Jackie's Place; it always has the best music.

Wow, Sam. That was BIG praise. Thanks so much. I loved the characters myself, and when I had to leave them, I was depressed for a while. Funny that you should say that my voice reminded you of Stephen King's because I was reading The Dark Tower last summer, and found that his voice crept into everything. Incidentally, my Jackie's Place does exist in the real world (Hemingway's in Toronto). We should have a Silver Bullet there once during the month of June.
