Day 2 - Just as windy as Day 1
Final word count for today: 8,745. I am out of control. But tomorrow promises to be much more tepid as I have several more difficult topics to cover. Won't be as fun to write, that's for sure.
As with yesterday, my characters continue to surprise me. Today, or yesterday, it's all been a blur, I wrote about Julie's best friend, Lily. Lily doesn't have a last name yet. Or she may, but they are locked away in my notebook right now, and I am too lazy/tired/done with writing to be bothered to go around and find it. I've decided that my first posts will be mainly character development posts, then I will reveal plot details. But everything is a twist right now. Everything is surprising and new, and I am just having fun and riding the wave of creativity my imagination has made for me. So, Reader, enjoy:
The morning passed with little to report. I tamed the beast masquerading as hair that resided on top of my head, got dressed and headed out the door to meet Lily at Jackie’s Place. When I arrived, she was already there, sitting at our table.
“Hey, you!” I shouted across the restaurant, hurrying over to the table. “Long time, no see.”
“It hasn't been that long. Remember lunch last week? At Bertoldi's? We ran into Valerie, and those god-awful kids of hers. I wonder if you are allowed to call children assholes.” she laughed.
“How could I forget? That was a hoot,” I said with mock enthusiasm. Lily knew how much that had pissed me off. I hate when people think that once they have kids, nothing else is important. Assholes.
“Don’t worry about her. She’s just in an unhappy marriage. Not to mention the fact that she is an ass hat. Always was. Always will be,” she reassured me. Best friends always know what you need to hear.
Tall and slim, with perfectly straight blonde, flowing hair, Lily was practically my opposite. In terms of looks, at least. But our personalities just seemed to mesh, somehow. Ever since we had met, 10 years earlier during our Frosh Week at Western, we had been inseparable. Of course, in a situation like Frosh week, when you are thrust out of the happy, comfortable world you had built for yourself in highschool into a completely new one, kicking and screaming like a newborn baby thrust from its mother’s womb, bonding is instant. But there was something more between Lily and I. Most friendships formed during those first few days fizzled by the end of first year, or, at the very most, by the time undergraduate was complete. But Lily and I had stayed friends, even though we had pursued different endeavours, and our lives had taken completely different paths. We still always made time for each other. And a lot of that time was spent at Jackie’s Place.
I ordered drinks for the both of us. Our traditional Coor’s Lights. But Lily stopped me.
“I think I’ll just have water, with a slice of lemon” she told the waiter.
1) Love the Gordon the Vampyre shout-out. I need to get him in my book immediately, in a recurring role.
ReplyDelete2) You're making good headway on the swearing-to-bolster-word-count front.
3) Damn it Sam, you're hundreds of words ahead of me. I don't think that I'm even going to try to keep up with you, because at this rate, we'll be done our novels in a week!
Yes, I have to admit, you are in an excellent position to take my crown this year. Reggie may be a rage-aholic, but she appears to keep the f-bombs down to a minimum. That might have to change soon. Who is Valerie? Why are her kids assholes? I am intrigued...
ReplyDeleteValerie is my step brother's wife but I will let Sam tell you more about her.
ReplyDeleteI can't believe how much you have written! Amazing!
