Fixing some problems - 27,782
I feel like the Esmondes should get the August cover of Poets and Writers. Just a thought.
I was ready to give up yesterday. With the stress of the wedding setting in (I probably won't sleep well for the next 30 days, FYI), and the stress of NaNoWriMo, something had to give. I figured that the wedding was a necessity, so I might just give up NaNoWriMo and save my sanity. But then I called Katie, probably delayed her writing a lot, but we talked for a long time. And it made me feel better about novel writing. So thank you Katie!
As soon as I hung up the phone, I wrote 2700 words in an hour and half. But it was very painful , very disturbing, and I cried. But I fixed a very important problem. I know that we are not supposed to do re-writes, but I was having a lot of trouble understanding my characters' motivation. Why were they trying to rid Winigo of evil when it was not affecting them at all? So I went back and added a particularly disturbing scene that gives these kids motivation for their actions: revenge. I can't really post an excerpt, because it would be a 2700 word excerpt.
On a brighter note, Scott, Dad and I saw Inception last night. And it was good. Really really good. The best part is the cast: Leo DiCaprio, Joseph Gordon Levitt, Marion Cotillard, Ellen Page. What more could you ask for? If you see it, we have to have a talk about the very final frame. Scott, Dad and I are fighting about what it means.
Until next time, faithful readers.

I'm really glad that you continued to write, despite the insanity of writing a novel in the month before you get married. You just have to take it one day, and 1700 words at a time. All these things are manageable. And very, very worth it.
ReplyDeleteIt's good to write something that stirs you- probably means it will be stirring for the reader, too. I know there is a no editing rule, but I break it frequently... sometimes, you have to fix it so you can go forward, and let's face it, Esmondes aren't the type to pretend they've fixed it and come back to it later. And doing this clearly unblocked you, and allowed you to go over in your word count.
Keep at it, you can do this.
Also, can you write a letter to Poets and Writers and tell them they need to feature us on the cover? Will any of us be willing to wear acid wash capris for this experience?
ReplyDeleteSo happy that you fixed what was bothering you and that you're continuing with the novel. I really, really want to read it so...
ReplyDeleteIf you need a pep talk later, you can call me, too. I know that you can do this, Sam, and you'll feel so great about doing it.
COMPLETELY agreed that Esmondes and Wannabes need the cover of that magazine. Or, really, the cover of that magazine needs us. I am willing to wear whatever it takes, acid wash or not.
I'm sorry that writing was so painful, but I'm proud that you got things back on track. I'm glad that I was able to help and keep you on track, but I'm sure that you wouldn't have really quit.
ReplyDeleteLet's leave the acid wash jeans to Indigo. I'll take care of the gormless look.
I want to see Inception. But with NaNoWriMo, I never have the time! Hopefully next week.
